“A Circular Simbol on the Tomb of Cyrus” is one of the most famous and best researches of David Stronach. This article is about tomb of Cyrus the Greatm emperor of ancient Persia.

The spare, precise use of ornament on the tomb of Cyrus the Great gives each decorative device a prominentrole. Those moldings that are most obvious, namely those that mark the base of the plinth, thebase of the cella, the outline of the doorway, the transition to the roof and the line of the rakingcornice, each serve to articulate the different parts of the building as a whole. But just because ofthis-because each of these elements has a clear architectural value-none of these motifs can besaid to lead us very much closer to Cyrus himself; that is, towards any more explicit, personal state-ment. In one sense, of course, this remains one of the virtues of the monument, for solely as it standsthe existing fabric succeeds in communicating a rare sense of dignity and integrity.

At the same time, however, such stark anonymity presents its own drawbacks. At a guess, thislast aspect of the monument may have driven some frustrated early Greek visitor to compose thesuitably laconic but still highly unlikely lines that are frequently reported to have been “inscribed” on the tomb.20 And most more modern visitors, in something of the same spirit, have, no doubt,regretted the absence of some more manifest, personal label. Yet as I hope to show, the survival ofstill another molding, which appears to have escaped all previous notice, may provide a more directlink with Cyrus-as well as a potential new insight into his beliefs…
