Plato
Plato was a Greek philosopher who was born in Athens during the classical period of ancient Greece. He founded the Platonic school of thought and the Academy, which was the first institution of higher learning in continental Europe. Plato, along with his teacher Socrates and his student Aristotle, are central figures in the history of ancient Greek philosophy and the philosophies of the West and the Middle East that arose from it. It has also shaped religion and spirituality. His so-called Neoplatonist commentator, Plotinus, influenced both Christianity (through church fathers such as Augustine) and Islamic philosophy (eg Farabi).
In modern times, Friedrich Nietzsche recognized that Western culture was growing in the shadow of Plato (calling Christianity “Platonism for the masses”), while Alfred North Whitehead famously said: “The safest general description of the European philosophical tradition Contains the following: A series of footnotes to Plato. Plato was the originator of written dialogue and dialectical forms in philosophy. He raised problems for what later became all the major areas of theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy. His most famous contribution is the Theory of Forms Known to Pure Reason, in which Plato offers a solution to the problem of universals known as Platonism (also vaguely referred to as Platonic realism or Platonic idealism).
He is also the namesake of Platonic Love and Platonic Solids. He is generally considered to have been his most defining philosophical influence, along with Socrates, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and the pre-Socratic Parmenides, although little remains of his predecessors, and much of what is known today about the figure. We know it is from Plato himself. Unlike the works of nearly all of his contemporaries, Plato’s entire collection is thought to have remained intact for over 2,400 years. Although their popularity has fluctuated, Plato’s works have been consistently read and studied.
